What Does the PMSMA Campaign Do?

The PMSMA ensures comprehensive and quality antenatal checkups to pregnant women across India.

  • A minimum package of antenatal care services is provided to the beneficiaries on the 9th day of every month at the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Clinics.
  • The care is to ensure that every pregnant woman receives at least one checkup in the 2nd ⟋ 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
  • If the 9th day of the month is a Sunday or a holiday, then the Clinic should be organized on the next working day.

Why Was 9Th of Every Month Selected?

  • 9th of every month is selected symbolizing the 9 months of pregnancy, dedicating the date to pregnant women

Progress of PMSMA

  • More than one crore antenatal check-ups have been conducted.
    • Maharashtra has reported the largest number of check-ups among the Non-Empowered Action Group (EAG) States and Rajasthan has reported the largest number of check-ups among the Empowered Action Group States.
    • There are more than 12,800 government health facilities across States⟋UTs where PMSMA sessions are conducted on the 9th of every month.
    • More than 4,800 private sector doctors have pledged to provide voluntary service under PMSMA.
  • More than 385 private sector volunteers have provided services in the high priority districts such as Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh.

How Does the PMSMA Work?

  • Every pregnant who comes to the centre is registered and tests are conducted.
  • The reports of the test are prepared before the woman visits the obstetrician⟋physician.
  • All complicated pregnancies are referred to better facilities and further tests.
