Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Has Been Approved by CCEA [ Current News (Concise) - Government Schemes ]
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has been approved by the Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for providing free of cost LPG (cooking gas) connections to women from BPL Households.
The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas will implementation body of this scheme.
It will be for the first time ministry will be implementing a welfare scheme.
Under the scheme:
- For each LPG connection financial support of 1600 rupees will be provided to the BPL households.
- The State Governments and the Union Territories will made consultation to identify eligible BPL families.
This scheme will be implemented in three years’ time frame namely in the
- FY 2016 - 17
- SY 2017 - 18
- TY 2018 - 19
To provide five crore LPG connections to BPL households Government has reserved 8000 crore rupees.
The main aim of PMUY is to enabling women and protects their health by shifting them from traditional cooking based on unclean cooking fuels or on fossil fuels that have serious health hazards to clean cooking gas.
For indoor air pollution unclean cooking fuels are main source that causes diseases such as:
- Heart disease
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Lung cancer
It also causes significant number of acute breathing illnesses in young children and BPL families are worst victims of unclean cooking fuels.
In India, the poor families are not able to afford LPG which is mainly found in the urban and semi-urban areas, mostly in middle class and affluent households.
