  • In February 2019, the Union Government (Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution) had approved centre-sponsored pilot scheme on “Fortification of Rice and its distribution under Public Distribution System.

  • The Ministry approved this Pilot Scheme for a period of three years beginning 2019 - 20.

  • The rice is fortified with Iron, Vitamin B-12 and Folic Acid under this scheme.

  • During initial phase of implementation, the scheme focusses on 15 districts preferably 1 district per State.

  • It has been observed that the regular milled rice is low in micronutrients and serves primarily as a source of carbohydrate only and therefore the fortification improves the nutrient value.

  • The Operational responsibility regarding the implementation of this pilot scheme is of states which are going to fortified rice for distribution through Public Distribution System (PDS).

  • The Financial assistance upto 90 % will be provided to North-Eastern, Hilly along with the island states. To other states the financial assistance has been extended upto 75%.
