  • New scheme should be transparent, fair, & reward demonstrated excellence & performance & has been inspired by recent innovations in major national awards.

Features of New Guidelines on Selection of Teachers for National Awards:

  • From now onwards, all regular teachers will be eligible to apply & no min. years of service is required. This has enabled meritorious young teachers to apply (under earlier scheme, only teachers w/min. 15 years of service were eligible).

  • For 1st time, all teachers could directly apply & nominate themselves for award (this feature did not exist in earlier scheme).

  • Self-nominations from teachers were invited online on www.mhrd.gov.in. Web Portal was developed by Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) & entire software ran smoothly w/o any glitches or complaints (it is for 1st time that online applications have been invited for these awards).

  • 6692 applications were received from teachers from all over country clearly indicating that initiative was successful.

  • Number of awards has been rationalized to 45. This has been necessary to restore prestige of awards (under earlier scheme number of awardees had crossed 300).

  • Out of all applications received, every district selected 3 best teachers & forwarded these to committee under State/UT Secretary of Education who made shortlist. Total of 152 nominations were finally received from all States, UTs & Organizations.

  • Final selection was done by independent Jury. Criteria adopted were to select those teachers who had shown innovation in their work & had added value to school & to their students.

  • These nominated teachers gave presentation before independent Jury comprising senior educationist, during 3rd week of August, 2018. This ensured that all of them were given opportunity to place before jury their contribution & work done by them.
