First Hybrid clone species 205 was developed for sub-tropical climate and it was launched in 1918 for commercial farming: Shri Radha Mohan Singh. Sugarcane revolution started with launch of variety 205 and now ICAR- Sugarcane Breeding Institute has released variety 0238.

  • Following is important information from the event “100 years of Excellence In Sugarcane Research and “New India Manthan – Sankal Se Siddhi” organized by ICAR

  • Sugarcane farmers should use intercropping technique to increase income by growing oilseeds, pulses, potatoes, and cucumber with cane

  • Sir Dr Venkatraman, for the first time, released hybrid clone variety 205 (Saccharum officinarum and Saccharum spontaneum) for sub-tropical climate in 1918 for commercial farming.

  • The hybrid clone led to 50 % increase in sugarcane production in North India and popular species like Saccharum Barberi and Saccharum Sinensis were left far behind.

  • Sugarcane Breeding Institute has since developed several hybrid clones for sub-tropical condition including species 312 for the subtropical climate in 1928 and species 419 for tropical climate in 1933.

Sugarcane Yield from Species 0238 and 0118

  • Species 0238 and 0118 are popular in north India with farmers reaping higher yield and sugar mills getting more sugar

  • Significant increase in sugarcane yield and sugar recoveries witnessed in the northern states after expansion of species 0238 in the region.

  • In the last season, 0238 covered 36 % cane area in Uttar Pradesh, 63 % in Punjab, 39 % in Haryana, 17 % in Uttarakhand and 16 % in Bihar.

Sugarcane Production in India

  • India is 2nd largest producer of sugarcane in the world

  • India is leading sugarcane exporter exporting more than 28 Lakh tons of sugarcane last year

  • Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of sugar cane, followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.

  • With a production of 1, 333 Lakh Tonnes, Uttar Pradesh accounts for 39 % of total sugarcane production

  • Uttar Pradesh has the largest area- 21 Lakh Hectares of land under sugarcane cultivation
