Union Government nominated Professor JS Rajput, former Director of NCERT, as India’s representative to Executive Board (EXB) of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on March 25, 2018.

  • Elections for members of the EXB for term 2017 - 21 was set up on November 8, 2017.

  • In this election India won w/162 votes in Group IV during 39th session of General Conference which was held from October 30 to November 14, 2017.

  • Next meeting of EXB of UNESCO is scheduled to be held in UNESCO Headquarters at Paris from April 4 - 17, 2018.

Executive Board of UNESCO

  • Executive Board of UNESCO has 4 year term of office & 58 seats.
  • Executive board is one of constitutional organs of UNESCO.
  • It is elected by General Conference.
  • Board examines work for organization & corresponding budget estimates.
  • It is main organ responsible for all policies & programmes of UNESCO.
  • Member of board enjoys vital role in shaping & reviewing UNESCO’s policies & programmes corresponding to its 5 major programs on education, natural science, social & human Sciences, Culture & Communication & Information.

  • Professor JS Rajput is known for his contributions in reforms in school education & teacher education.
  • He proposed valuable changes in school education curriculum as Director of NCERT. These were five Sai values: Truth, Peace, Nonviolence, Righteous Conduct (Dharma) & Love.
  • He is also known for regulating B. Ed correspondence courses as 1st Chairman of NCTE & for starting innovative 2 year B. Ed course.
  • His research publications in Physics earned him a Professorship at age of 31 years.
  • He published various research papers in several specialized areas in education, guided doctoral level researches & authored several books.
  • He has served several posts including posts of Professor in NCERT in 1974, Joint Educational Adviser in Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1989 - 94; Chairman of NCTE during 1994 - 99 & Director of NCERT during 1999 - 2004.
  • UNESCO acknowledged Professor Rajput’s contributions.
  • UNESCO has selected him for Prestigious Jan Amos Comenius Medal for outstanding contributions in research & innovations in 2004.
  • He was awarded w/Maharishi Ved Vyas National Award by MP Govt. for lifelong contributions in Education.
  • His edited book ‘Education of Muslims in India’ was released by PM on June 15, 2015.
  • GoI awarded him Padma Shri in 2014.
