CHAMAN project seeks to provide strategic development to the horticulture sector, to increase farmer’s income. It was launched three years back by the Ministry of Agriculture. Under mission of Integrated Horticulture Development (MIDH).

  • The project is being implemented by Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre (MNCFC) in collaboration with ISRO Centers (SAC & NRSC) and 12 state horticulture departments, NHRDF, IMD, ICAR Centre and State Remote Sensing Centers.

  • Launched three years back and is likely to be completed by March 2018.

Objectives of CHAMAN (Coordinated Horticulture Assessment Using Management Using GeoiNformatics)

  • Use of satellite remote sensing data for area and production estimation of 7 horticultural crops (potato, onion, tomato, chili, mango, banana, and citrus) in 12 major states in 180 districts.

  • Programme uses GIS (Geographical Information System) tools along with remote sensing data for generating action plans for horticultural development (site suitability, infrastructure development, crop intensification, orchard rejuvenation, aqua-horticulture, etc. ).

  • Carry out research activities on horticultural crop condition studies, diseases assessment, and precision farming.

  • Provides methodology for preparing reliable estimates of horticulture crops

  • Provides suggestion for growing selected crops in the high suitable areas identified under CHAMAN in the current jhum and wastelands.

  • Also lowers post-harvest damages of farmers by recommending desired post-harvest infrastructures like cold storages thereby increasing their income.

  • Includes geo-spatial studies like crop intensification, orchard rejuvenation, and aqua-horticulture to grow horticultural crops in profitable manner.

Current Progress

  • Report of site suitability study for North East would be handed over to the states by January 2018 for immediate consideration for implementation.

  • The wasteland and jhum land areas identified for one crop in one district each of North Eastern States, under site suitability studies are to be utilized by the State Governments for development projects.

  • On completion of this project, similar geo-spatial Studies would be conducted in all states.

Achievements of CHAMAN

  • Potato Production Forecast at National and State Level and Final forecast (F2) at District Level for 5 states (Bihar, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal)

  • Mango and Citrus Orchard mapping: Using LISS III and LISS IV and Cartosat dataset object based/Pixel-based classification was done for Fruit Crop Mapping (Mango and Citrus) in selected districts of Bihar, UP & Punjab.

  • Post-harvest infrastructure planning by assessing the potential of cold storage capacity for fruits and vegetables in Bihar state.

  • Aqua-horticulture: Remote sensing based assessment of wetlands for Makhana (Foxnut) cultivation in Darbhanga district of Bihar

  • Signature study of vegetable crops using hand-held spectro- radiometer.

  • Phenology assessment of grapes using multi-date remote sensing data in collaboration with ICAR-NRC Grapes.

Importance of Horticulture

  • Horticulture one of the major drivers of growth in Agriculture providing nutrient rich crops to the people and better remunerative prices to the farmers thereby augmenting their income.

  • Provides higher employment opportunities in the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors gaining significant prominence in the recent years.

  • India is the second largest producer of vegetables and fruits in the world and is first in the production of banana, mango, lime and lemon, papaya and okra (ladies finger).
