Public Health Innovation

Ayushman Bharat Programme

  • To provide comprehensive primary health to the community.

  • In Covid-19, pandemic it is being utilized to provide free testing and treatment for its 53 crore beneficiaries.
  • Support from DH-ICMR through programmes like health technology assessment, standard treatment workflows and national list of essential medicines, diagnostic, and assistive technologies.

ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research)

  • Developed and validated the indigenous Covid Kawach Elisa test for antibody detection of the virus.
  • Can be produced at a lower manufacturing cost.
  • Makes it easy to use in resource-limited settings.
  • The services of the Ministry of Civil Aviation under ‘Mission Lifeline Udan’ were availed during the nation-wide lockdown.
  • For carrying ICMR consignments of diagnostic material across the country.
  • Doorstep deliveries were coordinated with several courier companies and state governments.
  • In Jan 2020, India had only one laboratory testing for Covid-19, at the National Institute of Virology, Pune.
  • At present India has more than 2100 laboratories across the country conducting Covid-19 tests.
  • Testing was initiated in partnership with laboratories under organizations like CSIR, DBT and DRDO, MHRD, Medical Colleges and Private Laboratories.
  • ICMR is further striving hard to provide research support to national programs to achieve the targets as set under national Health Policy and UNSDGs towards Universal Health Coverage.
