Racism & Its Genetics

HERC2 Genes and OCA2

  • Associated with the light skin, eyes and hair in Europeans.
  • According to Science Journal study report these two genes arose in Africa.
  • Developing skin colour is a biological process.
  • People in Africa have almost every skin colour on the planet.
  • As per Science a large proportion of African origin people have genes responsible for lighter skin.

OCA2 gene:

  • Formerly known as the P gene.
  • Provides instructions for making protein called the P protein.
  • This protein is located in melanocytes.
    • A specialized cells that produce a pigment called melanin.
    • Melanin is a substance that gives hair, skin and eyes their colour.
    • Melanin is also found in the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (the retina) .
    • P protein may transport molecules into and out of structures called melanosomes.
    • For most of the biological processes tight control of pH is necessary.

HERC2 gene:

  • HECT and RLD Domain Containing E3 Ubiquitin Protein Ligase 2
  • A Protein Coding gene.
  • Disease associated with HERC2 include:
    • Mental Retardation
    • Autosomal Recessive 38 and Skin/Hair/Eye Pigmentation.
    • Variation
  • Related pathways
    • Metabolism of Proteins and DNA Double-Strand Break Repair.

Non-Hispanic White People

  • Make up to 63 % of US Population.
  • Came to North America where Norse explorers around the year 1000.
    • Leif Erikson was a Norse explorer from Iceland.
    • First known European to have set foot on continental North America excluding Greenland.
  • Also referred to as Anglo Americans.
    • European Americans
    • Middle Eastern Americans
    • North African Americans
  • Americans of European ancestry represent ethnic groups
  • Combined account for more than half of the share of the white population:
    • German, Irish, Scottish and English.

Euro Centrism

  • Also known as also Euro centricity or Western-centrism.
  • A worldview that is centred on Western civilization.
  • A biased view that favours it over non-western civilizations.
