The Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 5, 2018, hosted a one-day Nobel Laureates Seminar organized by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India in association with the Nobel Foundation.

This is part of the Nobel Prize Series, which aims for regular and landmark engagement between the Indian scientific and policy community and the Nobel Foundation.

Indians in Nobel Laureate List

  • 12 Indians (5 Indian citizens and 7 of Indian origin or residency) are Nobel Laureates.

  • Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian citizen to be awarded and Mother Teresa is the only woman in the list.

  • C. V. Raman in physics, Amartya Sen in Economics, Kailash Satyarthi in Peace are Nobel laureates.

  • Sri Aurobindo was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1943 and for the Nobel Prize in Peace in 1950.

Nobel Laureates in the Seminar (Important)

  • Christiane Nusslein-Volhard is a German biologist renowned for her embryonic development of fruit flies. Her contribution earned her the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She said “India’s population, pollution, healthcare, food security and biodiversity face challenges that can find solutions in science. ”

  • Richard John Roberts is an English biochemist and molecular biologist felicitated with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the mechanism of gene-splicing. He said

“ability to communicate science to people was important and that scientists should learn how to communicate effectively. Want more Indian Nobel Laureates? Give them opportunities”

  • Serge Haroche is a French physicist who was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for Physics for devising methods to study the quantum mechanical behaviour of individual photons.

  • Tomas Robert Lindahl is a Swedish-born British scientist specializing in cancer research. In 2015, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He said, “I couldn’t have achieved the Nobel Prize without a good teacher. There is strong interrelationships between education and research, and that relationship should be strengthened”

  • A person or organization awarded the Nobel Prize is called Nobel Laureate.

  • The Nobel Prizes are prizes awarded annually by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Academy, the Karolinska Institute, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee to individuals and organizations.

  • The awards are given to people who make outstanding contributions in the fields of chemistry, physics, literature, peace, and physiology or medicine.
