Real Time Information System is a significant step of the Indian Railways that will help in monitoring precise speeds and movements of the trains throughout the journey right from the starting position to the destination. Nearly 500 passenger locomotives of the South Central Railway (SCR) have been fitted with the Real Time Train Information System (RTIS). The railway authority also plans to install RTIS on the Freight trains to monitor unscheduled stoppages, mechanical breakdown and even theft of goods. Bharath Electronics Limited (BEL) has got the contract for supplying of 2,835 devices to be installed on locomotives and network infrastructure.

RTIS System Preview

  • It has been developed by the centre for railway information system with the help of GAGAN (GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation).

  • GAGAN is a satellite based augmented system to manage traffic in the Indian Air Space which is developed by ISRO and Airports Authority of India (AAI).

  • Every train track through the RTIS shall be installed with application software. The application software shall determine the train movement events such as arrival and departure of train and stations which is running through.

  • The movement of the train shall be based on the spatial coordinates and speed received continuously from GAGAN receiver.

  • These information related to position, location shall be communicated to the central location server of the Indian railways. This is done through SMS or mobile data services.

  • Information received by the central location server shall be processed and then send to the control office application for the purposes of automatic plotting of control chart for each train. Control office application integrated with the National Train Enquiry System. This allows the passengers to accurate time information.

  • Emergency messaging between locomotive driver and control office also implemented through RTIS.

South Central Railways

  • South central railway was formed on 1966. Presently SCR has 6 divisions’ Vizag, Secundrabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntakal, Guntur, and Nanded.

  • South central railway serves 6 states. The states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra and to a limited extent portion of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, & Madhya Pradesh.

  • SCR has 1,284 locomotives including diesel (582) and electric (702).

  • Out of 582 diesel locomotives about 334 have been installed with RTIS device and 248 are yet to be fitted with it.

  • Out of 702 electric locomotives 268 have been installed and 434 need to be fitted.
