What is Horticulture?

Horticulture is plant agriculture concerned with “garden crops” as contrasted with agronomy (field crops, mainly grains and forages) and forestry (forest trees and products). It is branch of agriculture concerned with intensively cultured plants directly used by man for food, for medicinal purposes, or for esthetic purposes. Thus:

  • Horticulture is both a science and an art- incorporating both design and scientific farming
  • Deals with intensively cultured and high-value crops.
  • Includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, flowers, ornamental plants, and medicinal plants.
