Renowned physicist Dr. Menon played a prominent role in the development of science and technology in the country over the last 50 years, is no more amidst us. He was Scientist, Science & Technology policy-maker, scholar, parliamentarian, Cabinet Minister. He has been described as one of India’s most eminent “statesmen of science”.

About MGK Menon

  • Full name: Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon also known as M. G. K. Menon.
  • Born on 28 August 1928 Mangalore, Karnataka, India.
  • Education: Prof. Menon took his Ph.D. from the University Bristol, UK in 1953;
  • He has a large number of honorary doctorates from universities in India and abroad.
  • Fellow of all the three Science Academies in India; and has been President of each one of them.
  • Did path breaking research in Scientific Work in Cosmic Rays, Particle Physics and high-energy inter-actions of elementary particles.
  • He was also a member of the Planning Commission (1982-1989); scientific advisor to the Prime Minister (1986-1989); Vice President, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (1989-1990) and Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha (1990-96).

  • Padma Shri in 1961
  • Padma Bhushan in 1968
  • Padma Vibhushan in 1985

Association with TIFR

  • He joined TIFR in 1955 with his close ties with Homi Bhabha.
  • He became the director of the institute in 1966
