Sarabjit Singh Marwah: First Sikh Senator of Canada

Sarabjit Singh Marwah becomes first India born Sikh to be appointed in the Canadian Senate (upper house) . He was the one from six Ontarians appointed to Senate by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

  • He became the first and only Indian-origin person to be appointed as member of the Canadian Senate.
  • He is the third Sikh person in the Canadian parliament after Defence Minister Harjeet Sajjan and Science Minister Navdeep Bains.

About Sarabjit Singh Marwah

  • Born in 1952 in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • Completed his graduation from St Stephen՚s College and the Delhi School of Economics.
  • Earned MBA from the University of California.
  • In 1978 started his career as financial analyst at Scotiabank in Toronto.
  • Appointed as Chief operating Officer (COO) of the bank in 1998.
  • Appointed as bank՚s senior executive vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) in 2002.
  • In 2005 served as vice chairman and chief administrative officer.
  • Served as vice chairman and COO of the bank from 2008 to 2014 till his retirement.
  • Founding member of the Sikh Foundation of Canada encouraging Sikh culture and art.
