A protein called PorB has been discovered by the scientist from Boston university School of Medicine. This could help to make vaccinations more effective and provide protection from diseases such as cancer. The researchers have found the protein on the exterior of the bacteria. It will help to increase amount of antibody production and can stimulate cells to kill offending agent and use it as an accessory to provide a better vaccination response. Proteins serve the role in all living organisms and as enzymes and antibodies.

The study deepens the general understanding of how vaccine adjuvant modulates immune responses.

“The antigen formulation with PorB triggers a sequence of cellular events at the periphery and in lymphoid tissue that are critical for the establishment of protection to a broad array of infectious diseases, and maybe for other diseases like cancer, ” Wetzler concluded.

What is neisseria meningidis?

  • This bacteria is often referred a Meningococcus
  • It is a Gram-negative bacterium which causes meningitis and other forms of meningococcal disease which can be life threatening.
  • It is a round shaped bacterium there it is referred as coccus and more specifically diplococcus because it has a tendency to form pairs
  • In the world there are about 10 % adults which carry the bacteria Nasapharynx
  • This bacteria serves as the main cause of bacterial meningitis in children and young adults which causes developmental impairment and death in about 10 % of cases
  • The epidemic and endemic forms of these have occurred in the worldwide.
  • It spreads through saliva and respiratory secretions during coughing, sneezing, kissing, chewing on toys and even freshwater.
  • The bacteria attack the cell by sticking to it along with thing extensions called pili.
  • The infected patient shpuld receive medication to prevent them from contracting the infection by keep them away for 7 days
  • Especially includes young children and the people who are in direct contact with them through kissing, sharing same utensils or medical interventions such as mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
  • The distance should be maintained with the patient for 7 days, if they didn’t and they were together for more than 8 hours then they have a chance on receiving chemoprophylaxis.

Significance of discovery is as follows: -

  • Normally the given vaccines will increase the amount of anti body production or else the stimulation of the cells shall be increased to kill the offending agent
  • But the special feature of this PorB vaccine include that it can do both the work
  • While doing the study over this the scientist have used two experimental models
  • Model no 1 was given the vaccination with antigen and mixed PorB, whereas the 2nd no model was given the antigen with the PorB
  • As they had assumed the model no 2 had an increased response to the vaccine antigen when it was compared with the vaccination with antigen alone
  • It shall be used to help body identify and fight off any bacterial infection
  • It has a potential to use its own machinery to fight off other diseases even before they establish.
