Shillong (Meghalaya) Gets Selected as the 100thSmart City

Shillong capital of Meghalaya is selected as 100th Smart City after evaluation proposal submitted by it. Till now, 99 smart cities was selected in 4 rounds of competition & w/today՚s announcement, selection of 100 cities is completed under Smart Cities Mission.

  • Previously, 20 cities were selected in January 2016,13 cities in May 2016,27 cities in September 2016,30 cities in June 2017 & 9 cities in January 2018.
  • W/selection of Shillong, total proposed investment in finally selected 100 cities under Smart Cities Mission would be ₹ 2,05, 018 cr.

  • Objective of Smart Cities Mission is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure & give decent quality of life to its citizens clean & sustainable environment & application of ‘Smart’ Solutions.
  • Focus is on sustainable & inclusive development & idea is to look at compact areas, create replicable model which will act like light house to other aspiring cities.
  • Smart Cities Mission of Govt. is bold, new initiative to set examples that can be replicated both within & outside Smart City, catalyzing creation of similar Smart Cities in various regions & parts of country.
  • It is drive to economic growth & improve quality of life of people by enabling local area development & harnessing technology, especially technology that leads to Smart outcomes.
  • Area- based development will transform existing areas, including slums, into better-planned ones, thereby improving livability of whole City.
  • New Areas will be developed around cities in order to accommodate expanding population in urban areas.
  • Application of Smart Solutions will enable cities to use technology, information, & data to improve infrastructure & services.
  • Comprehensive development in this way will improve quality of life, create employment & enhance incomes for all, especially poor & disadvantaged, leading to inclusive Cities.
