State Bank of India (SBI) has declared Silchar as its 5th North East Zone. This would facilitate banking for the people of Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur along with the Barak Valley of North East India.

  • SBI opened its administrative office at Silchar, Assam.
  • Chief General Manager donated Rs 11 lakh to Cachar Cancer Hospital in Silchar for setting up an oxygen unit as a part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity.
  • Other four zones of SBI in North East are:

    Guwahati

    Shillong

    Dibrugarh

    Jorhat

  • Previously Silchar was under Guwahati zone. However, difficult terrain made it difficult for the bank to address the complaints and issues of far away customers.
