Construction of new airport will be completed in 2018 in Parulechipi located in Sindhudurg dist. of Maharashtra. Project work is expected to be completed in June this year. Construction work will be completed in September before start of Monsoon & Ganesh Festival.

  • There are currently 3 international & 13 domestic airports in state of Maharashtra.

Aims of New Airport

  • Provide better connectivity to Konkan region of Maharashtra, parts of Goa, northern Karnataka & western Maharashtra, airport was required in Sindhudurg.

Facts on Sindhudurg Airport

  • IRB Sindhudurg Airport Pvt Ltd is building the airport under agreement with Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) on design-construction-financing-transfer (DBFOT) basis.
  • Agreement was signed in 2009 for construction of airport. Ministry of Environment & Forests had theoretically approved Ministry of Civil Aviation for construction of airport.
  • Length of runway of Sindhudurg Airport will be 2500 meters & there is facility to expand it in future. Cost of construction of airport is Rs. 520 cr.
  • Sindhudurg Airport will have 200 departures & operating capacity of 200 arrivals. After expansion of airport in future, this capacity will be increased to 400 departures & 400 arrivals.
  • Although airport is built keeping domestic passengers in mind, it will be equipped w/necessary facilities for service of international charter flights.

What Does DBFOT Mean?

  • Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) is a project delivery method, which involves designing and building the infrastructure, operating them for a specific period and transferring the ownership of the project to the Government after specific period.
