Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship is the responsible authority. Building vocational and technical training to skill up-gradation. Building new skills for existing jobs including the jobs roles that have arisen with Industry 4.0.

  • To ensure sustainable livelihood for all citizens in the country.
  • Special emphasis in 2019 on convergence, increasing scale, meeting youth aspirations thereby improving the quality of skilling.
  • Skill India Portal enabled data driven decision making by policymakers and removed information asymmetry in the skilling ecosystem.

Developments in the Past

  • Skill India campaign was launched in July 2015.
  • To train youths in market relevant skills.
  • To empower the youth for new India thereby matching the global market requirements.
  • Apprenticeship Act, 1961- For recognising and celebrating the contributions of the trainers and gurus towards Skill India.
  • Introduction of Kaushalacharya Awards to felicitate trainers from different sectors.

2015 - 16 MsDE Report

  • Less than 5 % of India՚s workforce is formally skilled
  • For South Korea it is 96 % .
  • For Japan it is 80 % .
  • For Germany it is 75 % .
  • For UK it is 68 % .
  • For US it is 52 % .
  • National Skill Development Mission was formulated in 2014.
  • More than 1 crore youth is being imparted with skills training every year under various central govt. programmes.
  • In August 2016 NAPS (National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme) was launched acting as a guide of basic training with various industries.
  • The main aim is to promote apprenticeship training and thereby engaging the apprenticeship engagement.

  • MSDE has also collaborated with the ITIs (Dual system Training scheme to train atleast 1000 ITIs

  • 20 hours mandatory module on entrepreneurship in short term skilling programme.
