Smart India Hackathon 2018 was unique initiative to identify new & disruptive digital technology innovations for solving challenges faced by country. Grand Finale of Smart India Hackathon 2018 (Software Edition) will be 36-hour software product development competition. It will be held on March 30 & 31 at 28 nodal centres across country.

About Smart India Hackathon

  • World’s largest nation-building initiative Smart India Hackathon is organized to harness innovative brilliance of youth & develop digital products for solving some of country’s pressing problems.

Details of Smart India Hackathon

  • On 2nd year, Smart India Hackathon has 2 editions – Software & Hardware Editions.

  • In Smart India Hackathon 2018 finals, 1296 teams comprise of around 8000 students will attempt to give solutions for 340 software problems listed by authorities.

  • Newly-introduced Hardware edition is scheduled in June. It will entail teams working 5 days to build hardware solutions.

  • Winners will get cash prizes for diff. categories at each centre & chance to be part of NASSCOM’s 10, 000 Startups programme.

Participation in Smart India Hackathon

  • 8000 students will attempt to give solutions for listed 340 software problems. Prizes to be won for diff. categories at each centre similar to last year.

  • Smart India Hackathon 2018 witnessed active participation from 27 Central ministries & 17 state govt. , which have sent 900 problem statements which they faced or need to be improved.

  • Some projects of SIH developed by students. Projects include special pendrive to prevent data theft (for ISRO), Airport crowd management system (for Air India), platform for North-East artefacts, gaming solution for health benefits (for Ministry of AYUSH).

After SIH

  • MHRD is engaging w/DST to ensure that selected teams from SIH2018 could be supported by Technology Business Incubators (TBIs) & DST has responded very positively.
  • Min. 27 projects will get implemented & adopted by diff. dept. at end of April or mid May 2018.

Background

  • After reviewing received problem statements, 408 problems (340 for software & 68 for hardware) were finally selected for Smart India Hackathon 2018 & are put on MyGov platform.

  • SIH – 2018 has received 17400 teams w/participation of more than 1 lakh students of Engineering, Management & MCA background. 1296 teams are selected for finals.

Background

  • 1st edition of SIH2017 has received 598 problem statements from 29 Central ministries.

  • More than 7500 teams applied. Entries were scrutinized w/help of more than 200 evaluators primarily from industry sector. Finally 1168 teams were shortlisted for Finale on 1st & 2nd April 2017.

  • On 1st April 2017, PM addressed students over video conference & inspired them to work for country. He appreciated concepts of SIH2017 initiative.

  • Grand Finale for SIH2017 was conducted across 26 diff. cities during which more than 9000 students worked non-stop for 36 hrs.

  • Diff. Ministries agreed to support 56 teams. It was decided that teams selected by ministries for taking projects forward will be given Rs. 3 lakh as grant. It will cover Rs. 5000 as stipend for 6 months for all 6 members & for covering project related expenses.

  • AICTE requested Persistent Systems Ltd to mentor students to ensure that developed products are state-of-the-art quality.

  • AICTE decided to pay Grant to all teams from its own budget, provided concerned Ministry is ready to guide projects & assure that projects will be implemented.

  • On 15th March, 2018 MoS for MHRD, Satyapal Singh spoke to 15 teams on video conferencing to review status & deployment schedule of projects & progress was satisfactory.

What is Hackathon?

  • Hackathon is design sprint-like event. Hackathon is day long coding competition where software programmers, developers, designers come together to build & design something cool.
  • In this computer programmers & other involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, including subject-matter-experts, collaborate intensively on software projects.
  • Goal of hackathon is to create useable software.
