Supreme Court declines voluntary use of Aadhaar card for beneficial schemes [ Current News (Concise) ]
About Supreme Court: It was established in 1937. It is the main legal and final court of appeal under the constitution of India. It is located in New Delhi. About Voluntary use of Aadhar Card: Aadhar card cannot be used for other services like opening bank accounts, getting phone connections which are not voluntary.
- It should only be used for Public Distribution System (PDS) and purchasing Kerosene and cooking gas (LPG) which is likely to be voluntary.
About Supreme Court’s declination:
- Supreme Court has declined some states like Gujarat and Jharkhand and other legal bodies like Reserve Bank of India, Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority, Pension Fund Regulatory Authority, Securities and Exchange Board of India, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for voluntary use of aadahar card other than for the PDS and LPG schemes.
- This decision was taken by the head justice J Chelameswar and further modification will be done by the larger constitution of Supreme Court.
