Surat has become the first district in the country to have 100 % solar powered Primary Health Centers (PHC). There are a total of 52 PHCs in the district and all of them are now powered by solar system.

  • Surat sets an example for country by developing villages that use sustainable forms of energy at a time when global warming is mounting with each passing day.

Key Facts

  • This initiative to bring down the electricity bill by 40 % and would help in fighting global warming.

  • Other than PHCs, there are 572 gram panchayats in the Surat District, out of which 150 are solar powered gram panchayats.

  • The other 422 panchayats to be solar powered soon.

  • 75 per cent of the aggregate cost of making gram panchayat solar powered is borne by the state government.

  • 25 % of the total expense of making the gram panchayat solar powered has been borne by the district panchayat.

Solar Power in India

  • Solar power in India is a fast developing industry.

  • The country’s solar installed capacity reached 20 GW in February 2018.

  • India expanded its solar-generation capacity 8 times from 2,650 MW on 26 May 2014 to over 20 GW as on 31 January 2018.

  • The 20 GW capacity was initially targeted for 2022 but the government achieved the target four years ahead of schedule.

  • The country added 3 GW of solar capacity in 2015 - 2016 and over 5 GW in 2016 - 2017, the highest of any year, with the average current price of solar electricity dropping to 18 % below the average price of its coal-fired counterpart.
