A new web portal has been launched by the Survey of India to make open series maps available to Indians for free. It was launched by Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Science, Harsh Vardhan on the occasion of 250th anniversary of SOI.

About Survey of India (SOI)

  • It is India’s central engineering agency which has been in charge of mapping and surveying.
  • It was set up in 1767 to help consolidate the territories of the British East India Company.
  • The Survey of India’s distinguished history includes the handling of the mammothGreat Trigonometrical Survey under William Lambton and George Everest and the discovery of Mt. Everest.
  • The members of the community if from the Survey of India Service cadre of Civil Services of India
  • The head being the Surveyor General of India.
  • It has been the principal mapping agency of the country.
  • It comes under the Department of Science & Technology.
  • It has surveyed the maps of each and every part of the country and have played valuable role in nation building and were pivotal in almost all major developmental activities of modern India.

Features of Nakshe portal

  • This can be readily downloaded as its free of cost
  • It has 3000 topographic maps or Open series maps all given in pdf format on 1: 50, 000 scale through Aaadhar enabled user authentication process.
  • They are helpful for the development activities in the country and can also be used to plan scientific expeditions, research and planning and development projects
  • Topographic maps or OSM comprise natural and man-made geographical features including terrain or topography.
