On third anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation launched third party verification survey report on progress of Mission in rural India. The Quality Council of India (QCI) conducted a third-party assessment of rural sanitation in all States and UTs, called Swachh Survekshan Gramin 2017 launched at a press conference today in New Delhi:

  • QCI surveyed 1.4 lakh rural households across 4626 villages
  • Found the overall toilet coverage to be 62.45 % while the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) MIS reported the coverage to be 63.73 % .
  • Observed that 91.29 % of the people having access to a toilet use it.

Swachh Bharat Rankings

  • To encourage States and districts to improve sanitation coverage and Solid Liquid Waste Management (SLWM) , the MDWS will rank all districts based on the data available on the SBM-G IMIS quarterly.
  • Ranking done based on parameters of performance, sustainability, and transparency, and are being announced on 2nd October 2017 for the quarter July-September 2017.
  • Competition amongst districts done based on quarterly ranking based on following formula: Total score (100) = Performance (50) + Sustainability (25) + Transparency (25)

Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) 70ThIndependence Day

Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) celebrated the week before 70th Independence Day as “Khule Mein Shauch Se Azaadi” saptaah:

  • More than 24 States prepared Swachhta Action Plan to reinforce efforts by innovative methods and community engagement.
  • On 12 August, 2017, MDWS and MoWR, RD & GR jointly announced 24 Ganga Grams from five States, Uttarakhand (3) , UP (10) , Bihar (4) , Jharkhand (5) and West Bengal (2) as target for Aadarsh Ganga Gram.
  • 30 Swachhta Raths were launched at Allahabad on August 12,2017

To mark the completion of three years of Swachh Bharat Mission, MDWS is planning various Swachhta events across the country from 25th September to 2nd October 2017. National Swachhta Awards will be given to the following grass root level swachhta champions, district officers, best Pakhwada Ministries, outstanding contributions by Ministries, PSU sponsors for Swachh Iconic Places and Swachhta Action Plan.

What is SBM-G IMIs

To accelerate the efforts for universal sanitation Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on 2nd October, 2014 with two Sub-Missions:

  • Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin)
  • Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban)

MDWs-Integrated Management Information System (IMIs)

  • The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) provides financial support to the state governments for drinking water sources and water supply schemes, their protection and maintenance and technical support for the line departments through the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP)
  • NIC Cell in MDWS developed an Integrated Management Information System (IMIS) - a comprehensive web based system for monitoring progress of habitations, rural schools and anganwadis with drinking water and the quality status of water sources.

About Quality Council of India (QCI)

  • QCI was set up in 1997 by Union Government jointly with Indian Industry as an autonomous body.
  • Mandate to establish and operate the National Accreditation Structure (NAS) for conformity assessment bodies and providing accreditation in the field of health, education, and quality promotion.
  • Promotes adoption of quality standards relating to Food Safety Management Systems (ISO 22000 Series) , Quality Management Systems (ISO 14001 Series) and Product Certification and Inspection.
  • Assigned with monitoring and administering the National Quality Campaign and oversee function of National Information and Enquiry Services.
