“Swachhta Hi Seva” is a nation-wide fortnight sanitation campaign under Swachh Bharat Mission launched by President Ram Nath Kovind from Ishworiganj village in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It is to run from September 15th to October 2nd, 2017.

Following facts are to be noted on the campaign:

  • Nation-wide mass mobilization drive with “Swachhta Hi Seva” pledge initiating parallel action in all the 250,000 plus Gram Panchayats and cities in India
  • Campaign coordinated by Union Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
  • The Ministry has created a special portal and web page on My Gov. in facilitating people to upload pre and post intervention photos of their shramdaan
  • Objective is to mobilize people and start jan aandolan (mass movement) for sanitation
  • People expected to undertake shramdaan for cleanliness, construction of toilets, and make environment open defecation free.
  • Reach poor and marginalized to provide them sustainable sanitation services.
  • UNICEF survey across 10000 households in 12 states measure the economic impact of sanitation at a household level- fully ODF communities save medical costs, value of mortality, and time- with average family saving ₹ 50,000 per year.
  • The cost-benefit ratio of a household was 430 % in fully ODF communities
  • The participation to come from the President of India to the common citizen involving Union Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers, legislators celebrities, and top officials.
  • The fortnight to also have countrywide essay, short films and paintings competitions, especially focused on schools, youth organisations, and central police forces.

Progress of Swachh Bharat Mission: Village Swachhta Index

  • 5 States, nearly 200 districts and nearly 2.4 lakh villages across the country declared Open Defecation Free
  • 1.5 lakh villages ranked themselves on the Village Swachhta Index based on the solid and liquid waste management.
  • Independent survey of 140,000 households by the Quality Council of India found household toilet usage to be 91 % .
  • NTPC invited national and international players to set up 100 waste-to-energy pollution-free plants across the country under the Swachh Bharat mission.

Seva Divas

  • 17th September 2017 was celebrated as “Seva Diwas” to offer shramdaan for toilet construction and general cleanliness.
  • Doordarshan organized a World TV Premiere of “Toilet: Ek Prem Katha” , a film that has an overwhelming message about access and usage of toilets
