Telecom Regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recommended a penalty of 3,050 crore rupees on Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea cellular for not providing sufficient interconnects points to Reliance Jio. Penalty should be imposed on these telecom companies for allegedly rejecting interconnectivity to newcomer Reliance Jio.

About Issue:

  • TRAI recommended a total penalty of Rs. 3050 core on Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular.
  • The Point of interconnect (PoI) blocking for Reliance exceeded the 0.5% permissible limit.
  • Reliance Jio alleged that insufficient interconnection points prevented its subscribers from making calls to other networks.
  • TRAI confirmed that 3 companies violated license norms by not providing sufficient interconnection points to Reliance Jio Infocomm.
