The US military has started moving parts of its controversial THAAD anti-missile defence system to a deployment site in South Korea. THAAD is designed to intercept short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal flight phase. The THAAD is a land-based anti-ballistic missile system that is capable of shooting down missiles inside or the earth’s atmosphere.

About THAAD:

  • The THAAD uses kinetic energy, instead of carrying an explosive component, to destroy incoming warheads.
  • THAAD is designed to intercept short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal flight phase

  • THAAD is managed by the Missile Defense Agency
  • THAAD is a major concern for China, which believes its powerful radar will be able to monitor its missile capabilities and undermine its nuclear deterrent
  • The THAAD system utilizes the Army Navy/Transportable Radar Surveillance (AN/TPY-2) radar to detect and track enemy missiles at a range of up to 1, 000 kilometers

  • Prior to development of a physical prototype, the Aero-Optical Effect (AOE) software code was developed to validate the intended operational profile of Lockheed’s proposed design
