Tiangong-2 Launches Micro-Satellite Banxing-2 (Download PDF)

Space lab of China, Tiangong-2 has successfully launched a micro-satellite Banxing-2. Two astronauts were launched into space onboard of the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft on 11th October 2016. It docked with Tiangong-2 on 13th October 2016. Satellite will start orbiting Tiangong-2 and Shenzhou-11 and taking photos with on-board high- resolution camera.

About Banxing-2

  • Micro-satellite Banxing-2 is roughly the size of a desktop printer, nicknamed “Selfie Stick” and Banxing-2 means Companion Satellite.
  • Developed at the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST).
  • Small technology satellite launched from the Tiangong 2 space station with weight of 47Kg.
  • Includes 25 Megapixel high-resolution full-frame visible light cameras and wide-angle imagers.
  • 3 solar panels generate enough power to adjust its orbit to shoot pictures of the lab and spacecraft.
  • Banxing-2 has an infrared camera.
  • In 2008, Banxing-1 accomplished the same mission for Shenzhou VII.
  • Banxing-2 is new model of Banxing-1.

Mission:Its mission is to take photographs of Tiangong II and Shenzhou 11 spacecraft, which has been docked with the lab.

  • Weight of Micro- satellites is around 500 to 100 kg.
