  • According to global advocacy group Water Aid, more than 163 million people in the country do not have access to safe drinking water, which is the highest in the world
  • Kitchen gardens on rise – small farmers
  • Spike in polio cases where Oral Polio Vaccine is given – Immunodeficiency vaccine-derived poliovirus (IVDPV) - Acute Flaccid Paralysis - countries — Argentina, Egypt, Iran, the Philippines, and Tunisia have registered these cases. The mutated virus, when excreted by the child, can lead to community spread, which is called circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus. Oral is live; injectable is attenuated

Overview

  • Nagaland: Naga tribes – dog meat for nutrition and building immune system (not a formal industry) . Alcohol was banned in the state 30 years ago. Yet it continues to be sold and consumed aplenty here. The Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 (regulation 2.5. 1. a) defines “animals” that can be used for production of meat and meat products) has been wrongly interpreted and enforced by the state. The government also cannot pass notifications imposing sweeping ban as it violates the fundamental rights of its citizens under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution.
  • Moderna is developing vaccine, a US company much in the spotlight because it is the first to kick off phase 3 clinical trials and has just received $ 1 billion from the Trump Administration to accelerate work on it. The current lawsuit has changed from the initial fight over ownership rights to an intellectual property (IP) challenge. Moderna is claiming before the adjudicating body of USPTO that the patents granted to Arbutus Biopharma, a small Canadian biotechnology company, for its lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology were neither novel nor innovative and should be revoked because it is an obvious concept. Setback to Moderma - its market value has quadrupled this year to $ 30 billion, allowing the company to raise $ 1.3 billion in a stock.
  • All mRNA vaccines or therapeutics has two components: the actual sequence of mRNA and the delivery mechanism. Moderna has made a breakthrough in the first but needs a delivery system. Now, it says the Arbutus patent does not cover the LNP used to make its mRNA-1273 – technology is much advanced now.
