It is 1st of its kind training programme in country.
It attempts to bring formal & structured training program for young, 1st time drivers as they apply for learner՚s license.
Its long-term objective is at improving road safety awareness amongst young adults by inculcating behavioral change & creating awareness abt responsible driving habits.
Programme will help Govt. to achieve its target of reducing road accidents by 50% by 2020.
It will help to main-stream road safety in formal education system.
Programme has immersive & interactive module led by senior faculty members of IRTE covering varied aspects of responsible driving including defensive driving, ill effects of driving under influence of alcohol, speeding & wearing of helmets spread over 2 days.
Programme will cover 20 universities w⟋total of 400 programmes across country.

Formed in - 1991
India՚s Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) is successfully running its Road to Safety initiative to provide capacity building training to traffic police officials & educate commercial drivers such as truckers & bus drivers & university students on dangers of drunken driving.
Programme has trained over 4624 traffic officials in road safety capacity-building, 6,000 commercial vehicle drivers & over 5,000 university students in more than 64 cities of 17 states.
Background on Global Road Accidents
India accounts for 12.5% (over 1.45 lakh fatalities year) of global road accidents, w⟋one road accident occurring every 4 minutes.
72% victims involved in such road mishaps are b⟋w age groups of 15 - 44 years w⟋speeding, reckless & drunk driving being top reason accounting for 1.5% of road traffic accidents & 4.6% of fatalities.
