Udupi Ramachandra Rao a former ISRO Chairman and space scientist was inducted in the Hall of Fame of International Astronautical Federation (IAF) at the closing ceremony of the 67th IAF Congress 2016 held at Guadalajara, Mexico. He is renowned for his remarkable contribution to the progress of astronautics.

About UR Rao

  • From 1984 to 1994 he had worked as Chairman of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
  • Oversaw the development of the geostationary launch vehicle GSLV and the development of cryogenic technology in 1991.
  • Contributed to successful launch of INSAT satellites.
  • First Chairman of Antrix Corporation, the commercial arm of the ISRO.
  • Chairman of Governing Council of the Physical Research Laboratory at Ahmedabad.
  • Serving as Chancellor of Indian Institute for Space Science and Technology (IIST) at Thiruvananthapuram.
  • He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1976.
  • Made it to Satellite Hall of Fame, Washington in March 2013 at a ceremony organized by the Society of Satellite Professionals International.

About ISRO

  • Stands for Indian Space Research Organization.
  • Space agency of Indian Government headquartered in Bangalore, India.
  • Formed in 1969 with name Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR).
  • First satellite named ‘Aryabhata’ was built by ISRO and launched by Soviet Union in 1975.
  • Rohini was the first satellite which was placed into orbit by SLV-3 in 1980.
