Cabinet has approved the IIM Bill that grants statutory powers to prestigious Indian Institutes of Managements. It enables institutes to give degrees. At present India has 19 IIMs. The Boards of Governors of IIMs would evaluate performance of institutes after some years.

Key features

  • IIMs will now be able to grant degrees to their students.
  • It provides for complete autonomy to IIMs, combined with adequate accountability.
  • Institutes will be managed by a Board, and each will have a chairperson and director which will be selected by Board.
  • More management experts and IIM alumni will participate in Board discussions.
  • There will be regular review of performance of IIMs by independent agencies.
  • Annual report of IIMs will be placed in Parliament and Comptroller and Auditor General will audit their accounts.
  • Report will include steps taken by institute to fulfil its objects and an outcome-based assessment of research being undertaken.
  • There is also a provision of Coordination Forum of IIMs as an advisory body.
  • The forum will facilitate sharing of experiences, ideas and concerns with a view to enhancing performance of all institutes.
  • Provision has also been made for inclusion of women and members from Scheduled Castes/Tribes in the Board.
