Union cabinet approved the amendments in Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, to modify the list of SC in Odhisha. Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, also approved amending Constitution (Pondicherry) Scheduled Castes Order, 1964, to change name of union territory from Pondicherry to Puducherry.

Approval for amendment

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval for amendments in

    • The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 to modify list of Scheduled Castes of State of Odisha
    • The Constitution (Pondicherry) Scheduled Castes Order, 1964 so as to change name of the Union Territory from Pondicherry to Puducherry in order.
  • Proposal of Sualgiri, Swalgiri caste, as per approved Modalities, was found to be eligible for its inclusion as a synonym of Sabakhia caste at SI. No. 79 in the list of Scheduled Castes of Odisha.

National Commission for Scheduled Castes

  • It is an Indian constitutional body established with a view to provide safeguards against exploitation of Scheduled Castes to promote and protect their social, educational, economic and cultural interests, special provisions were made in Constitution.
  • The first National Commission for Scheduled Castes was constituted on 2004.
  • Second National Commission for Scheduled Castes in series was constituted on May 2007.
  • Third National Commission for Scheduled Castes has been constituted on October 2010.
  • Functions of NCSC
  • To investigate and monitor all matters relating to the safeguards provided for the Scheduled Castes under this Constitution or under any other law for the time being in force or under any order of the Government and to evaluate the working of such safeguards;
  • To inquire into specific complaints with respect to the deprivation of rights and safeguards of the Scheduled Castes;
  • To participate and advise on the planning process of socio-economic development of the Scheduled Castes and to evaluate the progress of their development under the Union and any State;
  • To present to the President, annually and at such other times as the Commission may deem fit, reports upon the working of those safeguards;
