The Union Government decided to celebrate 100th birth anniversary of social activist and former RSS leader Nanaji Deshmukh from October 11, 2016 to October 11, 2017.  Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma announced during inaugural programme.

About Nanaji Deshmukh

  • Chandikadas Amritrao Deshmukh or Nanaji Deshmukh was a social activist from India.
  • Born on 11th October 1916 in Hingoli district of Kadolo, Maharastra.
  • Active social worker in several fields including education, health, and rural self-reliance.
  • Honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.
  • Leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, RSS
  • Served as member of the Rajya Sabha.
  • Follower of Lokamanya Tilak and his nationalist ideology.
  • Was part of Bhoodan Movement started by Vinoba Bhave and had supported J P Narayan’s Total Revolution movement.
  • Founded the Janata Party.
  • Won Lok election from Balrampur Lok Sabha constituency of Uttar Pradesh in1977.
  • Founder and Chancellor of India’s first rural University named Chitarkoot Gramoday Vishwavidyalaya at Chitarkoot.
  • Started the anti-poverty and minimum needs programme.
  • Introduced the philosophy of integral humanism and used it to improve the living standards of more than 150 villages of Bundelkhand.
  • Nominated for Rajya Sabha election based on his services to the nation in 1999.
  • Took his last breath on 27th February 2010.
