Union Minister of Commerce & Industry & Civil Aviation launched mobile application ‘ReUnite’ to track & trace missing & abandoned children. App is developed jointly by NGO ‘Bachpan Bachao Andolan’ & IT major Capgemini.

Highlights of Apps

  • App will work to reunite parents w/their children who have gone missing.

  • App is multiuser where parents & citizens can upload pictures of children, & provide detailed description like name, birth mark, address, report to police station, search & identify missing kids.

  • Photographs will not be saved in mobile phone’s physical memory.

  • Amazon Rekognition, web facial recognition service, is being used within app to identify missing kids.

  • App is available for both Android & iOS.

Bachpan Bachao Andolan

  • Founded in – 1980

  • Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) is NGO & India’s largest movement for protection of children & works along w/law enforcement agencies & policymakers.

  • It was founded by Kailash Satyarthi, social activist & Nobel Laureate.

  • BBA pioneered 1st consulted effort in country on issue of missing children & its linkages w/trafficking in case involving missing children of Nithari in 2006. Case led Supreme Court pass landmark judgement in 2013 ordering that FIR has to be lodged in all cases of missing children.

Facts and Figures on Missing Children

  • Every year, around 44,000 children go missing in country, of which, just 11,000 are rescued.

  • As per BBA study, 1,17,480 children were reported missing, 74,209 were traced & 41,546 remained untraced in 2 years b/w 2008 & 2010.

  • Among 20 states & 4 UTs, Maharashtra (26,211) reported highest number of missing children followed by West Bengal (25,413), Delhi (13,570) & MP (12,777).

  • Maharashtra (1,706) has highest number of traced children followed by Delhi (11,870), MP (9,537), UP (7,586), West Bengal (6,653) & Karnataka (3,522).
