Virat Kohli was named leading cricketer of the year for 3rd successive time by The Wisden Cricketer’s Almanack. Kohli was picked as one of the five Wisden Cricketers along with England’s Tammy Beaumont, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran and Rory Burns.

Wisden Cricketers of the Year Award

  • This award began in 1889 with the naming of “Six Great Bowlers of the Year and thereafter continued with the naming of “Nine Great Batsmen of the Year” in 1890 and “Five Great Wicket-Keepers” in 1891.

  • Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack selects the Wisden Cricketer of the Year based on the player’s performance in the previous season.

  • It was in 2004 this Wisden Cricketer of the Year Award was introduced. Prior to this from 2000 to 2003 the award was made based on players’ impact on cricket worldwide rather than just the preceding season in England.

  • Virat scored 2735 runs across the three formats in 2018 and therefore he was picked up as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the year.

  • Virat Kohli as a Skipper is only the third cricketer ever to have won the award more than three times after Don Bradman (10 times) and Jack Hobbs (8 times).

  • At an average of 59.3 Virat had notched up 593 runs in five Tests during India’s 1 - 4 loss to England and ended the year with five centuries to his name.

  • Kohli Scored 1202 runs at an average of 133.55 in 14 innings in the year 2018.

  • His strike rate was 102.55 and he also smashed 6 hundreds along with three fifties in the year 2018.

  • On 4 occasions he was the highest scorer of the match in the year 2018.

  • He has been awarded the Man of the Match for 5 innings this year – the maximum for any player And the Man of the Series twice.

  • Virat Kohli became the fastest to score 1000 runs in a calendar year during his unbeaten 157 against West Indies at Vizag on the 24thof October. He achieved the feat in 11 innings. He broke the record (15 innings) held jointly by him and Amla.
