Wetter March across India

  • The month of March 2020 has been accompanied by hailstorms and strong winds.

  • Rabi crops have been heavily damaged across India.

  • The worst affected are the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. These states are also the major wheat and mustard producing states.

IMD (Indian Meteorological Organisation) report

  • India received 82 % above normal rainfall between March 1 - 18,2020.

  • This figure was 212 % for central India.

  • States where the maximum number of districts have been affected include:

    • Uttar Pradesh

    • Bihar

    • Madhya Pradesh

    • Punjab

    • Rajasthan

    • Gujarat

    • Chhattisgarh

    • Telangana

    • Haryana

  • The farmers from Haryana (received 650 % above normal rainfall for this period) have reported crop damage over 95 % of farmlands.

  • Winter rainfall is brought by the Western Disturbance (WD) —a non-monsoon precipitation pattern driven by the Westerlies or Anti-trade winds.

  • They usually bring mild rain during January February to the Indian sub-continent, which is beneficial to the Rabi crop.
