The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has launched pilot project ‘Blue Flag’ to develop and enhance standards of cleanliness on beaches. Increase upkeep and basic amenities at beaches.

Aim of Blue flag Project

  • Enhance standards of cleanliness

Key facts of Blue Flag Project

  • The ‘Blue Flag’ is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that a beach, marina or sustainable boating tourism operator, meets its stringent standards.

  • Standards for FEE’s Blue Flag criteria include

  • standards for water quality

  • safety

  • environmental education and information

  • the provision of services

  • general environmental management criteria

Selecting Beaches for Blue-flag Project

  • Under the pilot project, each of coastal state/UT was identified and nominated a beach funded through ongoing Integrated Coastal Management Programme (ICMP).

  • All the coastal states nominated pilot beaches in their receptive territories including Goa.

  • Formal nominations are awaited from coastal UTs viz. , Daman & Diu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman & Nicobar.

What is Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)

  • The FEE is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation promoting sustainable development through environmental education.

  • It was established in 1981.

  • It is headquartered at Copenhagen, Denmark.

  • It is active through five programmes

  • Eco-Schools

  • Blue Flag

  • Young Reporters for Environment (YRE)

  • Green Key

  • Learning about Forests (LEAF).

  • Certificates, which FEE refers to as awards, are issued on an annual basis to beaches and marinas of FEE member countries.

  • The awards are announced yearly on 5 June for Europe, Canada, Morocco, Tunisia and other countries in a similar geographic location,

  • The awards for the countries in the southern hemisphere are announced on 1 November.

  • Spain has held the 1st position for nearly three decades since the awards began in 1987.
