Look East Policy

  • For thousands of years, Indians have turned to East to see sun rise & to pray for its light to spread over world.
  • Singapore is springboard to ASEAN. It is, for centuries, gateway for India to broader East.

PM on China

  • PM had spoken to China in his Keynote address, w/o direct mention of country, stating that rules & norms which guide “new order” must be based on consent of all, not power of few.
  • New order believe in sovereignty & territorial integrity off all nations, irrespective of size & strength.
  • These rules & norms should be based on consent of all, not on power of few. This must be based on faith & dialogue & not dependent on force.

Improving Relations with China

  • Improvement in relations comes after end of Doklam standoff in 2017, where Indian & Chinese troops were locked in tense situation at Doklam trijunction for 73 days.
  • China is willing to work w/Indian side to follow guidance of this consensus to maintain positive momentum of development of bilateral relations, to promote mutually beneficial cooperation, properly handle differences, maintain peace & tranquillity along border areas & thus move forward China-India relations.

What is Shangri-La Dialogue?

  • IISS Asia Security Summit was launched in 2002 by British think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies & Singaporean govt.

  • This annual dialogue brings together defence ministers & military chiefs from 28 Asia-Pacific countries to talk about security in region.

  • It gets its name from location of meeting, Shangri-La hotel in Singapore.

Why is Shangri-La Dialogue Important?

  • Dialogue gathers military representatives from some of world’s most powerful countries to discuss pressing & significant defence & security issues.

  • Meeting is chance for defence ministers, military chiefs & high-ranking defence officials to hold bilateral meetings on its sidelines.

  • It is attended by legislators, academic experts, journalists & business delegates from around globe, making it vehicle for public policy development & discussions on defence & security in Asia-Pacific.
