In a first, the Indian Navy inducts its first woman pilot, Shubhangi Swaroop, and three more woman officers in its armament unit. Women Bio-tech Incubator was set up in Chennai and Women of India Organic Festival organized by the Ministry of Women & Child Development came to a successful close on 15th October, 2017.

Women Bio-tech Incubator

  • It was inaugurated at Women Scientist and Entrepreneurs Conclave at IISF 2017.

  • There is a need to encourage women in science and framing through policies.

  • Women Scientists Conclave with the theme “Women Scientist and Entrepreneurs – Game Changers Driving Science for New India” was held as a part of India International Science Congress, 2017

  • Conclave motivates young women to pursue science and entrepreneurship and explore new opportunities.

Women of India Organic Festival 2017 Had Record Sales of Rs. 1.84 Crores- Mahila E-Haat

  • The Women of India Organic Festival organized by the Ministry of Women & Child Development at Dilli Haat was the largest festival of organic products by women farmers and producers.

  • The main aim of the Festival was to support and encourage women and women-led groups that promote organic farming, thus supporting their local community’s economy, creating jobs and keeping farmers thriving.

  • Exhibited and sold most varied range of organic products including food, kitchen products, species, pure fabric to wellness, personal care among others.

  • The total sales by the women farmers and entrepreneurs who came from 25 States was Rs. 1.84 Crores

  • Women participated from Ladakh, Manipur, Sikkim, and Pudduchery along with other states of the country.

    What is Mahila E-Haat?

  • Participants were enrolled in Mahila E-Haat, another initiative of the Ministry of Women & Child Development for women entrepreneurs.

  • Unique e-platform, which exponentially strengthens the socio-economic empowerment of women beyond the festival.

Importance of Organic Farming

  • Organic food contains more vitamins, minerals, and nutrients than foods produced with chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and preservatives.

  • Organic farming is preferable economically reducing cost of cultivation by 20 - 40 % and increases the incomes of farmers by improving quality of production as well as the quality of soil.

Navy Inducts Its First Woman Pilot, Shubhangi Swaroop, and 3 Woman Officers in Its Armament Unit

  • Astha Segal, Roopa A and Sakthi Maya S became India’s first women officers at the Naval Armament Inspectorate (NAI) - NAI is responsible for auditing and assessing the state of weapons and ammunition of the Navy.

  • Cadets passed out of the Ezhimala Naval Academy

  • Indian Navy started inducting female officers in 1991, but now the areas of induction have been expanded

  • Gyan Swaroop would now move to INS Garuda in Kochi and then graduate to the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad, which trains pilots of the Army, Navy, and the Air Force.

  • All the four will now undergo training in their chosen branches before being employed on duty

  • On successful completion of training, she will become the first woman pilot in the maritime reconnaissance stream.

  • Last month, Indian Air Force inducted three women pilots- Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh
