World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought Observed on 17th June (Download PDF)

17th June is being observed as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought annually with aim to spread awareness in public about combat desertification. 17th June is declared as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1994 and first time the day was observed in 1995.

  • The main aim behind observation of this day is to encourage and aware people about this issues specially in those countries who are facing desertification or drought such as Africa, and United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is the implementing body of this.
  • “Our Land. Our Home. Our Future“is the theme of this year which examines the link between land degradation and migration.
  • Poverty, political instability, deforestation, overgrazing and bad irrigation practices are the main reasons which lead to the desertification.
  • The ratio of international migrant has been increased worldwide from 173 million in 2000 to 244 million in 2015.

  • The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development mainly the Goal 15 emphasises the need to halt and reverse land degradation.

Desertification

  • Desertification means degradation of land in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas based on different factors.
  • Desertification reduced biodiversity and it is resulted because of climatic changes including drought, or human such as overgrazing.
  • Desertification is major social and environmental problem of many countries across the world.
  • The United Nations Conference on Desertification (UNCOD) had adopted Plan of Action to Combat Desertification (PACD) in 1977.
  • “United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa” was adopted in Paris on 17 June 1994 based on the direct recommendation of Agenda 21.
  • And the permanent Secretariat of the UNCCD was in 1997founded at the first Conference of the Parties (COP 1) held in Rome.
