World Food Day is observed on 16th October universally to mark foundation of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945. This day is celebrated by many organisations working on food security including:

  • World Food Programme
  • International Fund for Agricultural Development

Importance of Day

Objective is to increase public awareness about hunger challenges and encourage people to take action in the fight against hunger.

2016 Theme: “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too”

  • Highlights issue of food security related to climate change.
  • Call to adopt sustainable practices for growing more food with minimum land area and optimal resources.
  • Recognized by FAO’s Member Countries at the 20th General Conference.
  • The idea came from Hungarian Delegation to FAO
  • First celebrated on 16th October 1981.
  • Now considered as a Food Engineers day.
