  • It also increases awareness about the protection of safe navigation and marine life protection.
  • International Hydrographic Organization was International Hydrographic Bureau (IHB) , established in 1921.
  • The IHB was renamed to IHO in 1970.
  • IHB was established to provide a mechanism for consultations between governments on matters like
    • Safe navigation
    • Technical standards
    • Protection of marine environment
  • In 2005, the United Nations General assembly adopted a resolution to celebrate World Hydrography Day on every June 21.
  • The theme of World Hydrography Day 2020 is – ‘Hydrography enabling autonomous technologies’ .
  • The theme of World Hydrography Day 2019 was ‘Hydrographic Information driving marine knowledge’ .
