Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) was awarded National Intellectual Property Award, 2018 on 26th April, 2018 for being top research & development organisation for patents & commercialisation.

CSIR Organisational Structure
  • Award was conferred by Union Commerce Minister in a Function to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day. Director-General of CSIR, Girish Sahni, received award on behalf of CSIR.


  • Council of Scientific & Industrial Research is contemporary research & development organisation.
  • It was established in 1942.
  • It runs 38 laboratories & 39 field stations throughout nation, w/collective staff of over 12,000 scientists & scientific & technical personnel.
  • It is ranked 9th in world amongst 1207 govt institutions, w/overall global ranking of 75 amongst 5250 institutions.
  • It is mainly funded by Ministry of Science & Technology.
  • It operates as autonomous body thru Societies Registration Act, 1860.
  • It is known as pioneer of India՚s intellectual property movement.
  • CSIR laboratories are developing & providing technology focused on unfulfilled need & cutting edge knowledge base & human resource on other, for socio-economic development in Country.
  • Its domains range from environment to health & drinking water, from food, housing, energy to specialty chemicals & petrochemicals, glass & ceramics to mining, metals & minerals, medicinal plants, leather to machinery, instrumentation & strategic sectors including aerospace.
  • It is contributing to Missions like Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat, Samarth Bharat, Make in India, Innovate for India, Startup India & Skill India.

Indian Intellectual Property Office confers National Intellectual Property (IP) Award on outstanding innovators, organisations & companies in fields of patents, designs, trademarks & geographical indications on occasion of World IP Day every year.

World Intellectual Property Day

  • World Intellectual Property Day was observed on 26th April, 2018 w/theme ‘Powering change: Women in innovation and creativity’ .
  • Event was established by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000.
  • Date of 26th April was chosen because in 1970, World Intellectual Property Organization was established.
  • Day is celebrated annually to learn about role that intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright) play in encouraging innovation and creativity.
  • This year՚s World Intellectual Property Day campaign celebrates brilliance, ingenuity, curiosity & courage of women who are driving change in world & shaping our common future.
