The World Health Organization recently released the World Malaria Report, 2020. India made a significant progress by recording the largest reduction in malaria cases in South East Asia.

Report Analysis

  • The number was around 229 million globally in 2019.
  • The count has been the same for the past four years.
  • Around 88 % of Malaria cases in the south-east Asia region are from India.
  • The countries that alone account for 70 % of the global malaria cases apart from 71 % of global estimated deaths from malaria are Burkina Faso, Cameroon, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, India, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania.
  • There has been a significant reduction in cases by 73 % . The number of deaths due to malaria also reduced by 74 % .
  • The number of Malaria deaths in Africa has reduced by 44 % since 2000.

India՚s Situation

  • India was also among the 11 highest Malaria burden countries in the world.
  • The disease claimed about 4,09, 000 lives in 2019, compared to 4,11, 000 in 2018.
  • Between 2000 to 2019, India has seen a 71.8 % drop in malaria cases and 73.9 % deaths.
  • In the 9 years India has achieved a reduction of 83.34 % in malaria morbidity and 92 % in malaria mortality. Goal 6 of the Millennium Development Goals has been achieved.
  • Nearly 45.47 % of malaria cases in 2019 had been accounted by Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Madhya Pradesh apart from 63.64 % of deaths reported.

India՚s Fight Against Malaria

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched the National Framework for Malaria Elimination, NFME in 2016.
  • The National Strategic Plan for Malaria Elimination (2017 - 22) was launched in July 2017.
  • WHO initiated High Burden to High Impact (HBHI) initiative in 11 high malaria burden countries, including India?
  • In July 2019 Implementation of High Burden to High Impact (HBHI) initiative was launched in few states of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.
