The first edition of World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) was inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. It was organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) with the theme “Beyond 2015 is People, Planet and Progress.”

Key Facts

  • WSDS was previously known as Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) of TERI.
  • First edition of DSDS was organized in 2005.
  • Focus of this summit is to take lead in poverty reduction through businesses and private sector partnerships and ensure rapid adoption of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Joined by Nobel laureates, decision-makers, political leaders from across the world to solve issues related to sustainable development.
  • Provide a single platform to the stakeholders to discuss long-term solutions which can benefit global community.
  • 2016 WSDS also hosted events such as:

  • The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” is a set of 17 “Global Goals” with 169 targets shared between them.
  • United Nations along with its 193 Member States, and global civil society developed these goals, which are now contained in paragraph 54 of United Nations Resolution A/RES/70/1 from 25 September 2015.
