World Wetlands Day (WWD) is celebrated every year on 2 February. Marking the date in 1971 when the Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention. It was adopted in Iranian city of Ramsar, drawing attention to importance of wetlands.

Highlights

  • The theme for 2017 is “Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction”.
  • Theme is selected to raise awareness and to highlight vital role of healthy wetlands in reducing impacts of extreme events such as floods, droughts and cyclones on communities, and in helping to build resilience.
  • In 2016 theme was Wetlands For Our Future: Sustainable Livelihoods
  • Wetlands play an important role in providing communities with resilience to natural hazards such as flooding caused by storms, cyclones, storm surges, drought and tsunamis.
  • Under projected climate change scenarios, extreme climatic events, including floods, droughts and storms are expected to increase in frequency and intensity.

About Ramsar

  • The Convention on Wetlands, called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental treaty that provides framework for national action and international cooperation for conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.
  • Number of Contracting Parties: 169
  • Number of Ramsar Sites: 2, 260
  • Total surface of designated sites: 215, 276, 293 ha
  • Almost 90 % of UN member states, from all the world’s geographic regions, have acceded to become “Contracting Parties”.

What does the Ramsar Convention do?

  • Under the three pillars of Convention, Contracting Parties commit to
  • Work towards wise use of all their wetlands through national plans, policies and legislation, management actions and public education
  • Designate suitable wetlands for list of Wetlands of International Importance and ensure their effective management.
  • Cooperate internationally on transboundary wetlands, shared wetland systems, shared species, and development projects that may affect wetlands.
