📝Automatic Machine Translation (MT)

  • 👌MT translates a given text in one language to another, instantly.

  • While quality of translation produced varies depending on distance between language pairs, & technology used, it provides instant access to text in another language to user.

  • MT systems for Indian languages are available & produce good quality translation.

  • MT systems are available for about a dozen Indian languages, & need to be developed for all 22 scheduled Indian languages.

Speech Processing

  • 👌There are two parts to this technology:

  • Text-to-speech (TTS)

  • Speech-to-text (ASR) systems

Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

There are two technology areas under this head:

  • Optical character recognition (OCR), &

    • DLI is a digital collection of freely accessible rare books collected from various libraries in India.

    • DLI project started in early 2000 w/vision to archive all significant literary, artistic & scientific works of mankind.

    • Digital Library of India has currently 550,603 books w/191,677,823 pages (191.657 Million approx. ) in Portable Document Format (PDF).

  • 📝Information & Library Network (INFLIBNET)

    • 👌 INFLIBNET Centre is an autonomous Inter-University Centre of University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.

    • It is a major National Programme initiated by UGC in March 1991 w/its Head Quarters at Gujarat University Campus, Ahmedabad.

    • INFLIBNET is involved in modernizing university libraries in India & connecting them as well as information centres.

  • 📝Shodhganga: A Reservoir of Indian Theses

    • “Shodhganga” is name coined to denote digital repository of Indian Electronic Theses & Dissertations set-up by INFLIBNET Centre.

    • 📝Shodh Gangotri: Indian Research in Progress

    • Shodhgangotri is a new initiative that compliments “ShodhGanga”.

    • While “ShodhGanga” is a repository of full-text theses submitted to universities in India, Shodhgangotri hosts synopsis of research topics submitted to universities in India by research scholars for registering themselves for Ph. D program.

  • 📝National Library & Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)

    • Project entitled “National Library & Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content”, being jointly executed by UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium, INFLIBNET Centre & INDEST-AICTE Consortium, IIT Delhi provides for

      • cross-subscription to e-resources subscribed by two Consortia, i. e. subscription to INDEST-AICTE resources for universities & UGCINFONET resources for technical institutions; &

      • access to selected e-resources to colleges.

      • N-LIST project provides access to e-resources to students, researchers & faculty from colleges & other beneficiary institutions thru server installed at INFLIBNET Centre.

    • 📝e-ShodhSindhu

  • Based on recommendation of an Expert Committee, MHRD has formed e-ShodhSindhu merging three consortia initiatives, namely UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium, NLIST & INDEST-AICTE Consortium.

  • e-ShodhSindhu will continue to provide current as well as archival access to more than 15000 crore & peer-reviewed journals & a number of bibliographic, citation & factual databases in different disciplines from a large number of publishers & aggregators to its member institutions including centrally-funded technical institutions, universities & colleges that are covered under 12 (B) & 2 (f) Sections of UGC Art.

  • UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium is now merged into e-ShodhSindhu Consortium.

  • As per World Bank report 2019 on Ease of Doing Business, India has taken a huge leap of 23 ranks from 100 in 2017 - 18 to 77 in 2018 - 19 indicating it is continuing its steady shift towards global standards.

  • One of key indices which has contributed immensely toward this growth is ‘Trading across borders’ which shows an impressive improvement from 146 rank last year to 80th rank this year.

  • A digital signature takes concept of traditional paper-based signing & turns it into an ‘electronic fingerprint’.

  • This ‘fingerprint’ or coded message, is unique to both document & signer & binds them together.
