CHD - Definition & Types

  • Coronary heart disease or CHD is a disease which involves coronary arteries which either narrow down or stops functioning properly.
  • Diseases like:
    • Angina Pectoris – develops when blood flow to coronary arteries is restricted resulting in loss of oxygen supply to heart muscle.
    • Acute myocardial infarction (MI) – develops when blood flow is restricted and some heart tissues are destroyed.
    • Sudden heart attack
    • Cardiac arrhythmia
    • Rheumatic heart disease
    • Ischemic heart disease

Causes of CHD

There are several reasons of the development chronic heart conditions, for eg:

  • Non- modifiable factors – status, social mobility, family history, social class, age, gender, family history, ethnicity, lack of social support, etc.
  • Modifiable factors – smoking behaviour, Obesity, sedentary lifestyle, perceived work stress, personality, etc.
  • Cardiac invalidism

Prevalence of CHD

  • Responsible for 33 % of deaths in men.
  • In middle age, death rate is 5 times higher for men than for women.
  • Women show poorer recovery from MI then men.
  • Very common in adults and elderly.
  • 1 out of 4 babies born with heart defect suffer from CHD.
  • 3.8 million Men and 3.4 million women dies of CHD every year.

Role of Psychology in CHD

  • Beliefs – study by French et. Al. (2002)
    • He found out that the respondents had quite complex beliefs about the causes of CHD
  • Psychological impact of CHD – study by Lane et al. (2002)
    • Found out 30.9 % of patients reported elevated depression scores & 26.1 % reported elevated anxiety scores.
    • Study by Johnston et al. (1999 b) evaluated the impact of counsellor on cardiac patients in comparison with normal care.
  • Predicting & changing behavioral risk factors of CHD.
    • For eg: smoking, diet, high blood pressure, type A Behaviour & hostility, Stress, etc.
  • Psychology and Rehabilitation of patients: modifying exercise, modifying type A Behaviour, modifying general lifestyle factors, modifying stress, etc.

Management of Heart Disease: CHD

  • Role of delay
  • Initial treatment
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Treatment by medication
  • Stress management
  • Diet and activity level
