Concept

  • The terminology was made popular by Henri Tajfel
  • Categorization was identified using minimal group paradigm.

Classification

  • Classification not on the basis of size but sense of belonging/attachment.
  • In group - a person psychologically identifies as being a member
  • Out group - an individual does not identify with

Social Category

  • Social category – statistical grouping of people or classification of people on the basis of similar characteristics.
    • Do not interact with one another.
    • Not even know of each other՚s existence.
  • Type of quasi-group which may become a social group over time.

Quasi Group

  • Temporarily share the same physical space
  • Do not belong together
  • Do not have interaction
  • E. g. A crowd, commuters stuck in a traffic jam
